Washington DC & Gettysburg Including George Washington’s Mount Vernon
6 Days August 16 - 21, 2010
Day 1 Berkeley Springs, WV
We travel through picturesque countryside on our way to our first overnight in Berkley Springs, WV. Our hotel sits in the center of town next to Berkeley Springs State Park where a stone structure identified as George Washington's Bathtub encloses one of five major springs. It represents the primitive bathing facilities Washington and his friends used during the decades they visited. Dinner is included this evening.
Day 2 Alexandria, VA
After a delicious breakfast we travel to Washington, D.C., a grand and stately city of imposing National shrines and monuments that testify to some of America’s greatest names. On arrival, a local guide joins us for a half-day tour. See the Capitol Building with its impressive dome and the White House; visit the Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean Memorials and so much more! Our accommodation for the next two nights will be just outside Washington at the Washington Suites in Alexandria, VA.
Day 3 Alexandria, VA
After breakfast we board our coach and travel to Arlington Cemetery. More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington making it the second-largest national cemetery in the United States. It was designated an official military cemetery in 1864. A tram will take you to Tomb of the Unknowns where you can witness the changing of the guard.
We spend the afternoon at the Smithsonian Institute, the world's largest museum complex. This incredible collection began through the efforts of Englishman James Smithson in 1846. From Air and Space to Natural History to Art, there’s something for everyone.
Day 4 Gettysburg, PA
We begin our day with a visit to Mount Vernon, the beloved home of George and Martha Washington from the time of their marriage in 1759 until General Washington's death in 1799. The estate, gardens and farm of Mount Vernon totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. Today, roughly 500 acres of this historic estate have been preserved along the banks of the Potomac River. You will see 20 structures and 50 acres of gardens as they existed in 1799. The estate also includes a museum, the tombs of George and Martha Washington, Washington's greenhouse, an outdoor exhibit devoted to American agriculture as practiced by Washington and the nation's most important memorial to the accomplishments of 18th-century slaves.
We enjoy a special lunch in the Mount Vernon Inn before we leave this fascinating area and continue to Gettysburg for a two-night stay. On arrival we immerse ourselves in a world of Teddy Bears at Boyds Bear Country.
Day 5 Gettysburg, PA
This morning we visit the new Gettysburg National Park Museum and Visitor Center. The Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience immerses you in the sights and sounds of Gettysburg and features the massive “Battle of Gettysburg” Cyclorama—the country’s largest painting, fully restored as it first appeared when it debuted in 1884. See the film "A New Birth of Freedom", narrated by Morgan Freeman. The Museum features 12 exhibit galleries featuring artifacts, interactive exhibits and hands-on displays. Lunch will be at the historic Dobbin House.
Four Score and Seven years before the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, (1776), Reverend Alexander Dobbin built a house to begin a new life in America for himself and his family. Today his home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a colonial restaurant where you can enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of two centuries ago. During dessert, we will have a visit from Abe Lincoln himself! The balance of the afternoon is at your leisure.
Day 6 Home
This morning we must begin our journey home. It’s hard to believe that so many famous sights could be packed into just a few days! Memories of your tour to Washington and Gettysburg will last forever!
