The Amish of Holmes County, Ohio Leahmans Hardware and lunch at an Amish Farm
4 Days June 16 - 19, 2010
Day 1 – Canton, OH
Ohio boasts the world’s largest Amish population – more than 35,000 “plain people” live primarily in Northeast Ohio. We are going to take you into the heart of this relaxing but thriving region. Our first night is in Canton.
Day 2 – Walnut Creek, OH
After a delicious breakfast, we leave for Holmes County, an area where life doesn’t revolve around the clock, but around the sun. Our first stop is at Lehman’s Hardware. When you step into their 1840's era barn, you'll feel like you've stepped back 100 years in time. Museum-quality antiques line the walls and thousands of products you thought they had quit making years ago fill the shelves. Today, Lehman's ships old-fashioned, non-electric merchandise all over the world, from missionaries and doctors working in developing countries, to homesteaders living in remote areas.
Witness the cheese making process at Heini’s Cheese, one of the few actual cheese producing facilities in Ohio’s Amish Country using 100% Amish Farm Milk. Next, we make our way to a local Amish farm for a fabulous home cooked meal.
This afternoon a local guide joins us for an in-depth tour of the countryside, touching on the history and culture of the Amish. We check in to our Walnut Creek Hotel for a two-night stay.
Day 3– Walnut Creek, OH
After a delicious breakfast we make our way to the Behalt Information Center. "Behalt" ... meaning "to keep or remember", is a 10' x 265' cyclorama illustrating the heritage of the Amish and Mennonite people. Later, have some fun exploring the Holmes County Amish Flea Market, the area’s largest. This evening we tour Warther’s Carvings. Experience the story of the Warther family and see how their beloved hobbies of carving, button collecting, and knife making have left behind an amazing family legacy. The showpiece of the museum is an 8-foot long reproduction of Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train, appraised by the Smithsonian Institute as a “priceless work of art”. A special dinner is included in the “Ivory Room”.
Day 4 – HOME
We bid farewell to this quiet land and make our way back to Ontario with a new understanding of the Amish lifestyles of Northern Ohio.
