Savannah & Charleston – Old South Charm
10 Days March 21 - 30, 2010
Day 1: Clarksburg, WV
Spring will seem to arrive early as we begin our journey south towards the warmer climate of the South. Our first night will be in the midst of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains.
Day 2: Charlotte, NC
Today the scenery begins to change as we make our way through the state of Virginia and on to North Carolina and the city of Charlotte for the night.
Day 3: Savannah, GA
We continue south, arriving in Savannah, Georgia for a two-night stay. This afternoon we tour the “Azalea City of the South.” Savannah is famous for having the largest urban Landmark Historic District is the US. Within this 2.5 square mile area, you will discover a wealth of natural beauty, charm, architecture and history that is found only in the Old South. Our guided tour will highlight several of the Historic Squares lined with Live Oaks, the famous River Walk and a visit to the historic Davenport House. We spend two nights in a centrally located hotel near River Street.
Day 4: Savannah, GA
This morning we make our way to St. Simons Island. See the historic Christ Church, one of St. Simon’s most treasured landmarks. The graveyard is a fascinating spot to trace the Island history through the members of the founding families and includes the resting-place of author Eugenia Price. A stop will be made at the famous Lighthouse before returning to Savannah. The balance of the day is free for you to explore Savannah. Stroll through the city Squares filled with Live Oak and Azaleas, or enjoy a relaxing dinner at one of the many restaurants along Historic River Street.
Day 5: Charleston, SC
We continue north along the eastern coast arriving in Charleston for the night. On arrival we visit the Magnolia Gardens and Plantation. Described as one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, it abounds with hundreds of Camellias and Azaleas. Included in our visit are a tour of the stately mansion and a nature train ride of the plantation grounds. Our nights lodging will be at a local Inn.
Day 6: Myrtle Beach, SC
We awake to a city full of history and charm. This morning we tour Charleston in real southern style on a horse drawn carriage. See the historic homes that reflect the past and the present. You will have time during lunch to explore on your own. This afternoon we visit Boone Hall Plantation. The famous three-quarter mile avenue is lined with massive Live Oaks, draped with Spanish moss.As the setting for the films “Gone with the Wind” and “North and South”, this 738acre estate was once a cotton plantation and is rich in the history of the South. Try to visualize the way of life as it was in years gone by as we tour the mansion, the cotton house, slave cabins and formal gardens. Later we make our way to Myrtle Beach for a three-night stay in a beautiful oceanfront hotel.
Day 7: Myrtle Beach, SC
Rise and shine to the peaceful sound of the ocean. This morning a step on guide will join us for a tour of the Low Country that includes a visit to Pawleys Island. Here you have the opportunity to observe as the locals weave their famous Hammocks. We end our tour at the magnificent Brookgreen Gardens and Sculpture Park. A delicious lunch is included before setting out on a guided walking tour of the grounds. On return to the hotel, the balance of the afternoon is free to simply relax or to enjoy a stroll along the beach. Later we make our way to the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show for a laughing, knee-slapping good time!
Day 8: Myrtle Beach, SC
Today is yours to do what ever you choose. Relax, walk along the miles of sandy beach or maybe book a round of golf. Later we enjoy a fabulous all you can eat buffet featuring everything from prime rib to some of the best seafood in town!
Day 9: Frederick, MD
Today we must say goodbye to the “Old South” and begin our journey north. We overnight in Frederick, MD.
Day 10: Home
We continue north towards the border making a stop at the duty free before returning to our pick up points.
